Undernutrition in children results from an interplay of factors including environmental exposures to chemical (e.g. heavy metals, pesticides, aflatoxins, phenolic compounds, PM2.5 and CO) and biological hazards (e.g. malaria, helminth parasites, waterborne bacterial pathogens). Combating child undernutrition requires a multifaceted approach that integrates policies and strategies as food and nutrition security, but also clean and hygienic living conditions, environmental pollution reduction and public education campaigns.
